7 Ikea Hacks for Your Home Office That Will Spark Creativity

Just because your home office is a space for serious business, it doesn’t mean it has to look uninspiring. In fact, the more fun you have with your office decor, the better you’ll feel while you’re in there hustling.

So where does Ikea fit into this equation? After all, it offers loads of great, functional home office pieces for great prices, but these options also tend to veer toward the basic, even—dare we say—the boring.

Luckily for you, nothing from Ikea has to stay the way it looks when you put it together. These #ikeahacks will have you rethinking your entire office setup.

    1. Get fancy with file cabinets

Instead of purchasing a ready-made desk, just piece together your own from Ikea. Here, two Alex file cabinets make up each side of the desk, while a tabletop creates the perfect workspace. This way, you can space them out as far as you need (or as far as your space allows).

Not into the all-white look? Start with black or gray filing cabinets, or add a wood-stained desktop.

    2. Dress it up with dressers

If you’re a fan of the filing cabinet hack but you have way too much stuff for those tiny drawers, use dressers instead. The Malm three-drawer chests make great bases for desktops, with wide drawers perfect for cramming in all of your stuff.

    3. Go bold and bright

Whether you use your office shelves for books or fun displays, try skipping the boring white shelves altogether. The Vittsjo shelves start off white, but a coat of paint turns them into the centerpiece of the room—and makes all your stuff look a whole lot cooler.

    4. Transform your shelves

Not everything in your office is meant for display—some of it needs to be hidden away from sight. That’s where these Kallax shelves come in handy. Just a few carefully selected inserts turn those open shelves into hiding spaces for clutter.

    5. Have fun with a phone table

Landline phones aren’t much of a thing anymore, but a table that pays homage to them can be a great addition to your office.

This Kullen chest is nearly unrecognizable with some matte black drawer pulls and a fun paint job. And it can hold all sorts of odds and ends you’d like to store away.

    6. Make that Besta even better

This Besta cabinet has received a total makeover, and now it’s a piece that’s totally worthy of your home office. By installing some knobs, shiny new legs, and an overlay, it’s the perfect place to stash a printer.

    7. Keep your clutter undercover

A bookshelf with glass doors always sounds like a great idea—until you find yourself stressed out about all the clutter that’s accumulated.

A simple solution? Make over the cult favorite Billy bookshelf by hanging fabric behind the glass panels. Presto—you have hidden shelves that don’t always have to look presentable.
