Coronavirus Halted Their Wedding Plans, So These Couples Bought Homes Instead

    Carly Catalana

When they realized that their dream wedding was unlikely to happen this summer, Phil Bassis and Carly Catalana decided to do something unexpected: buy a home. They knew the Covid-19 crisis had likely shifted the market toward buyers and they hoped they might recoup some of the deposits for their wedding celebration in Manhattan.

“We just said, ‘why are we holding off?’ ’’ said Mr. Bassis, who owns a fashion business. “We can probably get a deal on the apartments that we were looking at now and why don’t we take that money that was intended for the wedding and put it toward the apartment instead?”

In early May, the couple purchased a Tribeca loft for $1.51 million. It was originally listed at $2.095 million, reduced to $1.895 million. They still hope to marry on their original day and celebrate with their immediate families.

After a three-year engagement, Jeff Henry and Erica Rodriguez were set to be married on May 30 in Monroe, Conn. On March 20, Dr. Henry got a residency in emergency medicine at the University of Connecticut. The couple is currently living in Roanoke, Va., where Dr. Henry attended medical school—so they switched from wedding planning to househunting. (The wedding has been postponed.)

They reached out to Realtor Rachael Cisz of Berkshire Hathaway. She visited homes on their behalf and looped them in on FaceTime. The couple went to Connecticut to tour homes, wearing masks, gloves and shoe coverings. After looking at 16 homes a day for three days, they found the one: a three-bedroom in West Hartford. “As soon as we pulled into the driveway we just loved it,” says Dr. Henry. If they close before residency begins, they may hold a private wedding ceremony in the backyard.
