Deutsch House, Designed by John Lautner, Is Listed in L.A. for $2.76M

A signature John Lautner house has landed on the market in Los Angeles. Fans of the architect’s midcentury modern style will swoon over the clean lines and gorgeous views.

The George and Lorena Deutsch House, which Lautner created for his bookkeeper in 1954, is now available for $2.76 million.

Humble in space but grand in style, the two-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom, 1,720-square-foot residence sits in the Hollywood Hills, just a quick dog walk from Runyon Canyon, off Mulholland Drive.

Lautner’s design takes full advantage of the location. The home is situated on the large lot so that the floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors on the home’s second story have jaw-dropping views of the Hollywood sign, city lights below, and the mountains above.

Lautner’s favorite contractor, the builder John de la Vaux, also contributed characteristic touches throughout the house. A former boatbuilder, de la Vaux built the residence with a prominent point that juts out like the hull of a ship, and used teak paneling inside. He also fashioned bedroom suites like staterooms.

Seven decades ago, Lautner employed features in this home that have all re-emerged as staples in today’s architectural design, including a cohesive use of natural materials like concrete and wood, an open floor plan, walls of glass, and high ceilings with exposed wood rafters.

Because of the home’s orientation on a hillside, there are two levels of outdoor space, with wood decks, a flagstone terrace, mature foliage, and a kitchen garden.

The current owners purchased the house for $849,000 in 2003, and have taken exquisite care of it. They’ve restored key elements, including stripping the teak walls and removing paint from the brick fireplace. They also updated the kitchen, respecting the midcentury vibe of the home.

Lautner, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, created over 200 architectural projects during his lifetime, the vast majority of them in Southern California.
