Leave it to the incomparable Viola Davis to cause quite the internet kerfuffle. Last week, on her birthday, the Oscar winner tweeted a photo of the ramshackle home she grew up in, along with text that read, “The above is the house where I was born August 11, 1965. It is the birthplace of my story. Today on my 55th year of life….I own it….all of it.”
The internet went wild for this powerful story of Davis reclaiming her childhood home.
Except none of it was true.
We set the record straight on this week’s episode—but how did news outlets get it so very wrong?
Other topics we discuss in this episode:
- The last remaining Blockbuster video store (in Bend, OR) is being rented out on Airbnb. If you could spend the night in this nostalgia palace, which ’90s movies would you watch? We rank our top rewatchables.
- You’d have to be living under a rock to not have heard about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s home purchase in Santa Barbara, CA. But was it really that surprising?
- Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are also reportedly house shopping in Santa Barbara, looking at massive estates where they can make room for baby.
- And, of course, our week’s celebrity real estate winner and loser.
