If the idea of truly immersing yourself in nature sounds appealing, this modern cabin in the redwoods might be ideal. You can get away from it all, but not so far away that you can’t comfortably work from home.
The luxury retreat nestled on the coast between Carmel, CA, and Big Sur is on the market for $2 million. It offers all sorts of perks of gracious living, while also being extremely environmentally friendly.
Richard Taylor, a conservationist, and his wife bought the 16-acre lot in 1985. They strategically situated the home in an area where they wouldn’t have to cut down any of the ancient redwoods that grow on the property.
It took five years to build the home, which is constructed from sturdy redwoods that had naturally fallen on the land and needed to be cleared.
A beautiful two-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1,643-square-foot residence is the the result. The home has a multitude of features, including forest views from almost every room—even the bathrooms—as well as skylights that invite in both sunlight and moonlight. A skylight in the loft-style primary bedroom is quite simply spectacular.
The double office is a true asset for anyone who wants to work from home in solitude. Given the property’s proximity to the San Francisco Bay Area, the new owners could make it their full-time residence or use it as a quiet, part-time getaway.
But perhaps the property’s most impressive feature can be found outside the front door, where 2 miles of trails were permitted and built on the property. The paths include a bridge over the adjacent creek that flows year-round, often visited by native rainbow and steelhead trout.
Closer to home is a calming spa built into a redwood deck, with beautiful views of the natural surroundings.
Because Taylor is a car collector, he fashioned a four-car garage with an auto lift. He also had a turntable built into the driveway, so cars would not have to be backed out directly onto the road. Clever!
Fresh water for residents is provided by a natural spring on the premises.
While this modern cabin in the woods feels extremely remote, the home is located just off Northern California’s scenic Highway 1 in Garrapatos Canyon, about a mile from the ocean and 10 miles south of Carmel’s town center.
“Nothing like this exists,” anywhere else in the world, boasts the listing provided by the agent for the property, Courtney Jones of Carmel Realty Company.
Other publications have run articles that attest to this home’s beauty. Check out the video below, and you’ll see why.
