Switching out your decor is a great way to keep your space feeling up to date and authentically you. But, let’s face it, it can also be an expensive hobby to maintain.

So in light of the incredibly high cost of pretty much everything right now (thanks, inflation!), we decided to feature some of our favorite affordable living room style upgrades this week. From DIY design hacks to wallet-friendly internet finds, all of these looks will bring decor bang without having to spend too many bucks.

Coming to you straight from the design gurus of Instagram, here are five thrifty living room looks you can steal while staying under budget.

1. DIY pastel prints

Everyone loves the bold color pop of pastel artwork, but not a painting’s usually high price tag. That’s why we think these pastel prints from @jessicalevantiques would make for the perfect DIY touch to brighten up your living room.

“Decorating your walls with pastel artwork has been very popular lately,” says designer David Lee, of Neutypechic. “Pastel colors are associated with peace and tranquility, and incorporating prints like these into your interior design is very easy. First, grab a canvas. Then, to create the best pastels, just add a bit of white to your favorite colors.”

2. Retro chic lamps

Another ultra-affordable way to revamp your living room? With new lighting, like a few of these retro lamps featured by @miltonandking.

“The 1970s to the 1990s were a great era for home design, which is why their trends are still very popular,” says Lee. “Retro lamps from the ’90s are an excellent way to keep your modern look while adding a vintage element to your home. You can find great retro lamps on Etsy. Or if you want to save a few dollars, head on to a garage sale.”

3. All-white sofa

Nothing speaks to the elegance of a living space quite like an all-white sofa. Fortunately, you don’t have to blow your savings to steal this look from @the.lucasarias. All it takes is a new slipcover.

“The cotton duck fabric covering of this simple futon is reminiscent of elegant linen sheets,” says designer Deborah Bettcher. “It invites you to crawl in and make yourself at home.”

4. Glam metallic accents

Something about bold metallic accents (like this side table from @stefanasilber) makes an otherwise neutral space pop.

Metallic accents sprinkled throughout a space give it an elevated, curated aesthetic,” says Bettcher. “All it takes is one Saturday visit to some local thrift shops and yard sales. Keep your eyes open for metallic objects of various shapes and sizes to offer visual interest. Vases, bookends, candleholders, boxes, and bowls will all do the trick.”
